11/30/2006  One of the signs that the world would be in its last days before the return of our Lord Jesus is that both in the church and in the world, people would become very inwardly focused and seek their own pleasure above the pleasure of God. (more...)

11/02/2006  There are times I think to myself that it would be better for our church to be in a more visible location (as opposed to being tucked into the residential neighborhood we are). Well, do you know that there is one day each year - 1 in 365 - that FBC's building is in the best spot in town for a church? Do you know what day that is? (more...)

10/12/2006  There's a fellow in the Bible I must have talked a dozen times to you about, and he came up again with the Youth Group last night. I'm sure at some point I've written about him before too. We've been talking about sharing our faith in a number of different settings of late, including with the Youth Group now too, and so this guy's story comes up a lot. (more...)

10/05/2006  I was considering the work that was done in the front of our building recently. As I admired the simple beauty of a construction project done well, I began to think about how much went into it - from the countless meetings with contractors to consider all options, to the allocating of a considerable sum of money, to the actual labor and skill applied by the contractor and his employees, (more...)

9/07/2006  Proverbs Chapter 7 says "Say to wisdom, 'you are my sister', and call understanding your nearest kin, that they may keep you from the immoral woman, from the seductress who flatters with her words." (Proverbs 7:4-5). This "seductress" is later described as "lurking at every corner" (7:12) and as crying out for our companionship (7:14-20). (more...)

6/15/2006  Reverberating in my head for a few days now has been the words to a hymn we sang together not long ago: "Let us labor for the Master from the dawn 'til setting sun, let us talk of all His wondrous love and care; then when all of life is over and our work on earth is done and the roll is called up yonder, I'll be there." It's a mission statement of sorts, isn't it? (more...)

5/11/2006  God is in control. That's a phrase you've no doubt heard - preachers use it, singers use it... And now I have. It's almost a bit cliché... But it really is a profound truth, and I've found myself leaning on the concept lately. (more...)

5/04/2006  A group of us began reading through the Book of Job at the Bible Reading Fellowship this past Saturday. Much of the story of Job is very familiar; or at least the general theme of his suffering is well known - even outside the circles of Jewish and Christian faith. But what often gets lost is the great testimony about Job before his trials commence, given right at the beginning of the book - and what a great example that is for us. (more...)

4/27/2006  Why is our Lord Jesus so important? He is the Way (John 14:6) - that is, the way, the only way, to the Father. That God made a single door for all to pass through if they are to find forgiveness and life is a critical aspect of His truth. (more...)

4/13/2006  Imagine asking someone how their day was and having them tell you this: "Well, I was downtown and I saw this kind of unruly mob beating this guy up. They were merciless. I thought of intervening by calling for help, but the people you would call were actually in on beating the guy up. When they finally paused momentarily to catch their breath, they did actually report to an official what was going on. (more...)

3/30/2006  I was thinking last night and again this morning about a verse that we covered in the First Corinthians study recently: "And what do you have that you did not receive?" (1 Cor 4:7). It prompted me to think about God's grace. I so utterly depend upon that grace, perhaps even more than I know. (more...)

3/15/2006  The comparison is between people in the eyes of God. We sometimes might slip into thinking that God is undiscerning when it comes to people, that He simply sees everyone the same. Not so. While it is true that there is a sense of "equality" in that we all need the same salvation in Christ Jesus, do not let that notion cloud that fact that how we live does indeed come up before the LORD, and that how we live does indeed affect our relationship with Him. (more...)

2/21/2006  “Hear him.” This is pretty straight-forward saying, no? Do you know who said it? Do you know to whom he said it, and about whom he was speaking? OK, time's up. God the Father spoke this from a cloud, and He spoke it to a few fishermen (Peter, James and John). And He spoke of Jesus, the Son whom He loved so much. (more...)
